Winery fire in Patras, Greece

Overview

A major fire broke out early on Saturday, September 5, at the historic Achaia Clauss winery in Patras, Greece. The blaze, which began around 05:00, destroyed a two-story stone building on the premises, including the ‘Daniliidos’ cellar, which was used for visitor reception and hospitality. The fire also destroyed a nearby tower and a 19th-century historic clock.

While firefighting efforts involving 27 firefighters, a specialized mountain unit, and multiple engines successfully prevented the fire from spreading to the adjacent Panachaiko forest or other winery buildings, the loss of historical assets is significant. The fire destroyed the winery’s extensive historical archive, which contained 165 years of commercial correspondence, manuscripts, and records documenting the economic and social history of Patras and Greece.

Crucially, the winery’s most precious wine stocks and historical cellars were saved as the fire did not reach the rear storage areas, such as the Imperial Cellar, which houses rare and old vintages. No injuries have been reported.

The incident occurred just hours before the scheduled ‘Open Treading 2026’ event, resulting in its cancellation. While reports indicated explosions were heard during the fire, the Fire Service's Arson Crimes Department is still investigating. Preliminary reports have suggested a possible short circuit as a potential cause. The company has stated its primary focus is now on repairing the damage and restoring the historic clock.
