Women's empowerment and development in West Africa
Overview
Developmental and social initiatives in Senegal have focused on climate adaptation, economic autonomy, and health awareness. In the Ziguinchor region, projects have targeted infrastructure for displaced women, mangrove reforestation, and leadership training through the West African Female Climate Action program. Agricultural resilience has also been addressed in Guinguinéo and Keur Demba Ngoye through agroecology training and diversified farming techniques to mitigate climate change.
Social empowerment efforts have expanded to include health advocacy and youth leadership. In Kaolack, community organizers used literature to promote breast and cervical cancer awareness during Pink October. Additionally, in Guinea, the government and UNICEF launched the ‘Mouvement des filles’ to provide adolescent girls with platforms for leadership and participation in public decision-making.
