Women's empowerment initiatives in Togo

Overview

Togo is implementing various initiatives to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment across political, professional, and economic sectors.

In the professional and political spheres, the National Patronage Council of Togo (CNP-Togo), with support from the European Union, is developing a charter to protect the rights of women and girls in the private sector. To address the low number of women in parliamentary and executive positions, the Groupe de réflexion et d’action Femme, Démocratie et Développement (GF2D) has introduced leadership training for young women to foster participatory democracy.

Economic and local governance efforts are also expanding. In Datcha, the DUBIEN association provided technical training in cosmetic manufacturing to promote economic autonomy for women and girls. Additionally, the NGO AVIP-Togo, supported by German Cooperation through GIZ, launched a project in the Zio 2 and Avé 2 communes to strengthen female leadership in local governance. This project focuses on teaching women about their rights and duties while engaging men in discussions regarding ‘positive masculinity’ to support gender equity.
