World Surf League Championship Tour in Philippines

Overview

The World Surf League (WSL) announced that the penultimate stop of the Champions Tour will be held at Cloud 9 in Siargao, Philippines. This addition to the schedule follows the cancellation of an event in Abu Dhabi due to geopolitical instability in the Middle East.

While some athletes, including Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina, criticized the change to the tour route, the event marks the first time the WSL Championship Tour has been hosted in the Philippines. The competition features 40 surfers across various divisions, including top-ranked athletes such as Yago Dora, Leonardo Fioravanti, and Kanoa Igarashi.

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Patrick Gregorio stated that the event is intended to drive sports tourism and showcase the country as a premier destination for international sporting events.

The Philippines Pro is now underway at Cloud 9 on Siargao Island. The competition window, which continues through November 10, has seen strong, tubular wave conditions influenced by Typhoon In-fa in the Pacific.

In the men's competition, Japanese surfer Connor O’Leary advanced to Round 2 after defeating Australia's Callum Robson. However, several high-profile competitors faced early exits: Olympic champion Kauli Vaast was eliminated in the Round 1 sixteenth-finals by local invitee Jayuard Alciso, dropping him to 11th in the world rankings, while French surfer Marco Mignot was eliminated in the opening round by Hawaii's Seth Moniz. The final stage of the season is scheduled for December in Pipeline, Hawaii.
