World Teachers' Day observances in the Balkans
Overview
In observance of World Teachers’ Day, academic and regional leaders in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia held forums and ceremonies to recognize the teaching profession.
In Mostar, the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU) in Bosnia and Herzegovina hosted a forum at the University of Mostar. HAZU President Mladen Bevanda called for a more scientific approach to education and noted that while physical violence in schools attracts attention, “verbal, spiritual, and cultural violence” are often overlooked. HAZU Assembly President Šimun Musa also addressed the challenges teachers face in balancing technological standards with evolving historical and literary interpretations.
Regional celebrations followed, including the presentation of the ‘Isaija Mitrović’ prize to Bojana Zgonjanin in Bijeljina, Bosnia and Herzegovina. In Croatia, Sisak-Moslavina County held a gathering for approximately 550 educators, where officials highlighted ongoing investments in school infrastructure and renovations across several municipalities.
