Worldcoin token market activity and ETF developments
Overview
In late July 2026, Grayscale Investments filed an S-1 with the U.S. SEC to launch a spot exchange-traded fund for the Worldcoin (WLD) token. The proposed GWLD ETF, intended for listing on Nasdaq, would use BitGo Bank & Trust as a custodian, prompting a 4-5% rise in WLD price to approximately $0.37. Shortly after, the World Foundation sold 217.4 million WLD to Pantera Capital and other institutional investors at a discounted rate of $0.2415 per token, raising roughly $52.5 million. This sale triggered a 10% price drop to near $0.34. The transferred tokens are locked for 12 months, and the daily token unlock rate was reduced by 43% to 2.9 million WLD. By early August, the token fell further to about $0.316, representing a 97.3% decline from its March 2024 peak of $11.68. Amidst these market challenges, the project faces regulatory scrutiny in Spain and Portugal regarding its use of biometric data. By mid-August, technical indicators suggested a potential bullish reversal. A 10% rally pushed the token above the $0.34 resistance level, supported by a 150% increase in trading volume. While the token reclaimed its 7-day and 20-day simple moving averages at $0.32, analysts noted that the 50-day and 200-day moving averages at $0.37 and $0.36, respectively, could act as barriers to a sustained recovery. By August 17, WLD showed further signs of recovery, regaining the $0.36 level following a 20% upside move over ten days. This momentum is attributed to the activation of EIP-7928 on World Chain, which enables parallel transaction verification to increase network speed, alongside eased supply pressure from the reduced daily emission rate. The token is currently testing resistance at the upper Bollinger Band, a position that analysts suggest could lead to significant price movement in either direction.
