WorldSkills 2026 competition in Shanghai

Overview

The 48th WorldSkills vocational skills competition in Shanghai, held from September 22 to 27, has concluded. The event featured approximately 1,400 young professionals competing across 64 disciplines at the Mercedes Benz Arena and the National Exhibition and Convention Center, drawing approximately 1.6 million registered viewers.

China emerged as the overall winner, securing more than half of the available gold medals. Switzerland finished as the top European nation and ranked among the top three globally, earning 12 medals, including four golds, through intensive apprenticeship-based preparation.

Austria, which sent its largest European delegation of 48 participants across 42 professions, finished seventh in the overall national rankings. The Austrian team earned ten medals, consisting of four silver and six bronze awards, in addition to 20 ‘Medals for Excellence’. Of the 48 Austrian participants, 32 received some form of recognition.

Individual successes for Austria included Andreas Landl in tiling, who earned a silver medal and the ‘Best of Nation’ title, and Luca Reitböck in carpentry. In the bricklaying category, Noah Trettenbrein received a ‘Medal for Excellence’ after constructing a yellow four-leaf clover from various bricks within a 22-hour timeframe. Additionally, Vincent Track secured a silver medal in the newly introduced field of process and procedural technology.

This performance marks an improvement for Austria compared to its previous showing in France, where the nation secured seven medals. Austria ranked as the third most successful European country at the event, trailing only Switzerland and France.
