Yemen political and maritime security crisis

Overview

At the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Oman and Saudi Arabia called for a political solution to the Yemeni crisis to preserve the nation’s unity and stability. Saudi officials emphasized their role as a major humanitarian donor and condemned Houthi attacks on commercial vessels, warning that regional escalations threaten maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, Bab al-Mandab, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aden.

In response to UN Security Council briefings, the Yemeni Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sanaa criticized Saudi Arabia, accusing the Kingdom of maintaining a blockade and closing Sanaa International Airport. The Ministry cited a July 13 Saudi military strike on the airport as the event that ended previous de-escalation. While expressing a willingness to keep humanitarian targets neutral, the Ministry warned that military operations in the Bab al-Mandab strait endanger global commerce and asserted Yemen’s sovereignty over its territorial waters. The Ministry further rejected descriptions of the conflict as an internal war, pointing to continuous Saudi military operations since March 2015.

Mohammed Abdulsalam, head of the Sana’a negotiating delegation, recently addressed the status of political talks. He stated that Sana’a engaged in direct and indirect communications with Riyadh to implement a roadmap to end the blockade. Following Omani mediation, Sana’a reportedly agreed to a five-day truce proposal contingent upon Saudi Arabia meeting specific humanitarian demands. However, Abdulsalam alleged that Saudi Arabia delayed its response for approximately 21 days, during which military activity intensified on Yemen’s western coast.
