Yemen security and political instability

Overview

The security situation in Yemen remains volatile, characterized by internal investigations in the North and targeted operations against Houthi-affiliated groups in the South. In Sanaa, Houthi leadership detained three high-ranking officials following intelligence breaches, including a cyberattack on a command and control center at the Al-Nahdayn camp.

In the southern regions, the Yemeni Ministry of Interior reported the disruption of several Houthi-affiliated cells in Aden, Lahj, and Abyan. In Shabwah province, Rapid Intervention Forces dismantled a 13-member Houthi cell operating out of a rented house used as a hub for goods smuggled by sea via the Radum district coast. The operation resulted in the seizure of a truck and two containers holding approximately 500 automatic weapons and sniper rifles, 120mm and 106mm projectiles, modern high-explosive improvised explosive devices, and specialized drone components and munitions. Authorities noted a shift in smuggling patterns toward combining heavy firepower with drone technology.

This seizure follows a Houthi ballistic missile attack on the Al-Alam camp in Shabwah on October 19, which killed 77 Rapid Intervention Force personnel and injured 195 others. Further military escalations include the Yemeni army conducting 753 attacks against Houthi positions within a single 24-hour period as part of ‘Dawn of Yemen’. The army claims these strikes neutralized approximately 218 Houthi members and leaders and disabled 78 military vehicles and weapons systems.

Parallel to these security developments, human rights organizations have issued urgent warnings regarding a deteriorating humanitarian situation in Taiz due to an ongoing Houthi siege. Politically, the country remains divided, with increasing demands to include Southern political causes in formal negotiations to address self-determination.
