Yemeni military operations against Houthi militias

Overview

Military activity between Yemeni forces and Houthi militias has intensified. On August 10, the Shabwa Defense Forces, supported by the Saba Axis Forces, initiated a military operation named ‘Arrows of Shabwa’. This offensive utilized heavy artillery and drone strikes against Houthi positions in the Harib-Ain front, southeast of Marib province. The operation followed Houthi drone attacks that killed two soldiers.

By August 16, the Yemeni Armed Forces reported a significant escalation, claiming to have conducted 181 military operations against Houthi targets within a 24-hour period. These strikes, involving drones, artillery, and rocket launchers, targeted command centers, weapons depots, and military sites across multiple provinces, including Marib, Al-Jawf, Saada, Al-Hudaydah, Taiz, and Abyan. Spokesperson Colonel Majid al-Nuzayli stated the strikes resulted in dozens of Houthi militia members being killed or wounded and the destruction of numerous military vehicles and equipment. The military characterized these actions as a response to Houthi attacks on civilians, economic facilities, and ports.

Concurrently, Houthi rebels launched attacks on government-controlled areas. In Marib province, reports indicated the use of ballistic missiles and drones targeting residential neighborhoods. Similar attacks were reported in the Muha area of Taiz, causing damage to homes and civilian property. Amidst these escalations, the Houthi group claimed the deaths of four of its members, including a high-ranking commander.

Further escalation has expanded the conflict to maritime environments. Houthi rebels launched ballistic missile strikes toward the Bab al-Mandab strait and the coastal area of Al-Mukha. Houthi spokespersons claimed responsibility for an attack in the Red Sea targeting a Saudi military landing ship and four escort vessels, alleging the strike caused fires and sinkings.
