Youth and volunteer firefighter training in Austria and DE

Overview

Youth and volunteer fire brigades in Austria and Germany continue to undergo rigorous training and certification exercises to validate emergency response skills.

In Austria, training has expanded to include large-scale specialized drills. The Aurach am Hongar volunteer fire department conducted a vegetation fire exercise titled ‘Der Hongar brennt’, involving 151 firefighters and 22 vehicles to practice water supply logistics and communication in difficult terrain. In the Vöcklabruck district, 32 breathing apparatus teams from 17 fire departments underwent respiratory protection performance tests at the ÖBB site in Attnang-Puchheim, resulting in the awarding of 34 bronze, 29 silver, and 30 gold performance badges.

Recent activities have placed a significant emphasis on youth development. In Flachau, Austria, six members of the Feuerwehrjugend Flachau earned the Fire Brigade Youth Performance Badge (FJLA) in Gold. In Wolfsberg, over 530 youth members from the BFV Leibnitz district participated in knowledge tests and practical drills, while 18 members of the Lebring – St. Margarethen department achieved various certification levels. In Germany, the Freiwillige Feuerwehr Steyrling hosted a summer program for 66 children, and in Eggstätt, 17 active members completed the ‘Water Performance Badge’ examination, testing skills such as establishing suction lines under strict time limits.

Large-scale drills also continue to test technical capabilities. In Telfs, approximately 50 youth firefighters from the Innsbruck area practiced technical rescues and vehicle fires. Additionally, over 220 rescuers conducted multi-day water rescue drills at Lake Ossiach, utilizing new technologies such as drones for thermal imaging and portable pumps on boats to create mobile firefighting vessels.
