Youth mountaineering achievements on Kang Yatse II

Overview

In August 2026, two separate 15-year-old mountaineers successfully summited the 6,250-metre Kang Yatse II peak in the Ladakh region of the Indian Himalaya.

On August 4, Moroccan alpinist Youssef Tazi reached the summit without supplemental oxygen as part of his ‘Road to Everest 2028’ program. Despite harsh conditions including dense fog, snow, and temperatures of –10 °C, Tazi and sixteen members of his expedition reached the peak. Tazi became the youngest Moroccan, African, and Arab climber to reach that altitude.

Later in the month, on August 31, Ujaan Shivarama, a 15-year-old from Bengaluru, also summited the peak. This expedition faced extreme weather with temperatures dropping to -15 degrees Celsius and heavy snowfall. Of the 24-member group consisting of mountaineers and sherpas, only three individuals successfully reached the summit.
