Yucatán economic and infrastructure development

Overview

Economic development in the Yucatán region is advancing through new international trade alliances and large-scale infrastructure investments. Business leaders from the Yucatán Peninsula and Belize have established agreements to increase bilateral trade, focusing on manufacturing projects in Belize that utilize Mexican raw materials to produce goods for Central America, the Caribbean, and Europe. To support this, regional academic and business sectors have launched specialized training in foreign trade and logistics.

Simultaneously, regional leaders have outlined the ‘Renacimiento Maya’ vision, which includes significant investments in connectivity and energy. Major projects include the modernization of the Port of Progreso, the development of a 25 billion peso Cargo Maya Train, and the construction of new power plants in Mérida and Valladolid. Additionally, a 2.1 billion dollar investment in the Cuxtal II gas pipeline aims to secure natural gas supplies, while urban planning initiatives in Mérida seek to strengthen the city’s role as a primary investment hub.
