Yucatán infrastructure and road disruptions

Overview

Infrastructure projects and public protests have led to various road closures and disruptions across Yucatán. In Progreso, the Secretaría de Infraestructura, Comunicaciones y Transportes (SICT) initiated major reconstruction of the Yucalpetén II bridge, involving the demolition and structural reinforcement of the bridge. This work required closing the road from the Mérida-Progreso highway distributor to the Yucalpetén entrance, with authorities advising motorists to use alternative routes through the port of Progreso.

Simultaneously, different groups have implemented blockades to demand improved road conditions and security. In Mérida, members of the Alianza Mexicana de Organización de Transportistas (AMOTAC) partially blocked the Periférico Sur to protest cargo theft, high tolls, and the poor state of the national road network. In eastern Yucatán, residents from communities such as San Pedro Juárez and Tixcancal blocked the Tizimín–Colonia Yucatán highway, demanding urgent repairs to roads in “deplorable condition.” In response to these protests, the Yucatán Highway Infrastructure Institute (INCAY) has entered dialogues with residents, stating that maintenance work is scheduled to begin around November 15.
