Zagreb Airport growth and cultural installations

Overview

Franjo Tuđman International Airport in Zagreb has experienced significant growth, reaching a milestone of four million passengers in a single year. The airport's concessionaire, Međunarodna zračna luka Zagreb (MZLZ), reported that passenger traffic is nearly 40 percent higher than 2019 levels, driven by a mix of business, tourism, and visiting friends and relatives travel. To accommodate this increase, the airport has announced plans for terminal expansion.

Alongside this operational growth, the airport has hosted public art installations by American artist Brendan Murphy. The ‘Boonji Spaceman’ sculpture, valued at over $1 million, was installed to symbolize cultural cooperation between Croatia and the United States. This was followed by the unveiling of the ‘Freedom Forward’ sculpture near the arrivals terminal, presented in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy to represent international cooperation and cultural exchange.
