Zeelandbrug infrastructure repairs
Overview
The Zeelandbrug in the Netherlands is scheduled for a six-week closure to all motorized traffic starting September 1. The closure, which is expected to last until October 12, aims to facilitate renovations on the bridge’s movable bascule section.
Due to budget constraints and challenges in securing a contractor for the entire scope of work, the Province of Zeeland has divided the project into phases. This current 2.5 million euro phase addresses material fatigue and cracks in the steel deck resulting from increased heavy truck traffic. Other planned work, such as asphalt replacement, has been postponed to manage the 5.5 million euro budget.
Qumey Metaal is performing the repairs to ensure the structure remains safe and available for the next 25 years. During the maintenance period, freight traffic will be diverted via the N57 (Oosterscheldekering), the A58, or the A4. These diversions are anticipated to increase travel times by 25 to 60 minutes, particularly during peak hours. While motorized vehicles, including trucks, are restricted, cyclists, pedestrians, and emergency services will maintain access to the bridge.
