Zelensky's political actions

Entities: Volodymyr Zelensky · Yuliia Svyrydenko · Nikolai Azarov · Alexander Lukashenko · Ukrainian Anti‑Corruption Bureau

Overview

In late July 2026 Zelensky’s office asked Ukraine’s prosecutor‑general to open war‑crimes proceedings against Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, citing forced transfers of Ukrainian children and Belarus’s support for Russian operations.

A few days later former prime minister Nikolai Azarov accused Zelensky of deliberately obstructing presidential elections, alleging that personnel reshuffles and other maneuvers were used to prevent a vote under martial law and mobilization.

On 3 August 2026 Zelensky signed a decree dismissing Olha Stefanishyna as Ukraine’s extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to the United States. Stefanishyna, appointed in July 2025, said the decision was personal and highlighted her tenure’s success in increasing U.S. weapons supplies and maintaining support amid a shifting political climate in Washington. The decree gave no official reason and named no successor. The dismissal was part of a broader reshuffle that also replaced the prime minister and defence minister and follows a long‑running anti‑corruption investigation into her asset‑declaration filings, though no formal charges have been filed. The vacancy coincides with intensified Kyiv lobbying for additional Patriot air‑defence missiles, underscoring the ambassadorial role’s importance for arms deliveries and intelligence sharing.
