Zoo animal breeding and repatriation in East Asia
Overview
Everland resort in South Korea announced that twin giant pandas, Ruibao and Huibao, are scheduled to return to China in December. The move follows international agreements regarding breeding capabilities. Before their departure, the pandas will undergo a month of health checks and quarantine, during which public viewing will be suspended.
Separately, twin red panda cubs have debuted at zoos in South Korea and Japan. At Seoul Grand Park, the twins Maru and Maron represent the first instance of natural red panda breeding in South Korea. Meanwhile, Nishiyama Zoo in Japan has implemented visitor restrictions, limiting daily viewing to the first 200 visitors to protect the health of its own pair of red panda twins.
