Zubeen Garg death investigation and legal proceedings
Overview
Legal proceedings continue in India regarding the death of singer Zubeen Garg, who died on September 19, 2025, during a yacht outing near Lazarus Island in Singapore. While Singaporean authorities and a state coroner previously ruled the death an accidental drowning with no evidence of foul play, an investigation in Assam led to criminal charges.
A Special Investigation Team filed a charge sheet in December 2025 naming seven individuals. Four of the accused—festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, manager Siddharth Sharma, bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, and singer Amritprabha Mahanta—face murder charges. All four have pleaded not guilty.
In recent developments, the Supreme Court of India is scheduled to hear a bail plea from Mahanta following a Gauhati High Court decision to reject his application. Additionally, the fast-track court in Guwahati has begun hearing testimony from witnesses, including Parikshit Sharma, an Assamese resident of Singapore who was present on the yacht during the incident.
