Zvonimir Boban critiques Italian football

Overview

Zvonimir Boban, former AC Milan player and Dinamo Zagreb president, has issued several critiques regarding the state of Italian football and specific club management.

Initially, Boban criticized AC Milan’s ownership, RedBird Capital, arguing the club has lost its competitive identity and has “adapted to not having ambition” by focusing solely on Champions League qualification. He suggested that major Italian clubs must aim for titles rather than mere participation.

Boban expanded his commentary to the broader Italian football landscape, suggesting the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) requires leadership from former players with institutional and managerial skills. He attributed the decline of the Italian national team to flaws in youth academies and club methodologies, noting that an emphasis on tactical safety often hinders individual player development. Additionally, he urged Inter Milan to provide more playing time to Croatian midfielder Petar Sucic.
