107th National Sports Festival competition
Overview
The 107th National Sports Festival in Jeju concluded with Gyeonggi Province securing its fifth consecutive overall victory. Finishing with a total score of 67,273 points, Gyeonggi outperformed competitors from Gyeongsangbuk-do and Seoul.
During the competition, Gyeonggi had been ranked third in the medal standings as of October 17, trailing Gyeongsangbuk-do and Seoul. However, the province ultimately achieved a return to dominance in athletics and rowing after a seven-year hiatus, alongside a 26th consecutive win in judo and five consecutive wins in both bowling and tennis.
Gyeongsangbuk-do achieved its best historical performance by securing second place, earning 94 gold, 107 silver, and 123 bronze medals. Notable performers for the delegation included swimmer Kim Seo-young, who secured four gold medals, and archer Kim Je-deok, who won two. The Seoul delegation finished in third place overall with 343 medals, including 109 gold, maintaining strong performances in mountain climbing and basketball.
Following the victory, Gyeonggi Sports Council President Lee Won-seong addressed the necessity of preventing the outflow of talented athletes to other regions. He called for expanded budgets and improved training environments, emphasizing cooperation between the province and the Office of Education to upgrade facilities like the Gyeonggi Physical Education High School and to secure corporate sponsorships.
