2026 MotoGP title battle tightens, Silverstone secured
Overview
The 2026 MotoGP championship remains highly competitive as the season enters its second half. Following 11 rounds, the top five riders are separated by just 24 points, with Aprilia’s Jorge Martín leading (208) ahead of Ai Ogura (194), Marc Márquez (190), Marco Bezzecchi (186), and Fabio Di Giannantonio (184).
Following the summer break, the season resumed at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Aprilia Racing achieved a historic milestone by sweeping the podium in both the Sprint and the main race, with Raúl Fernández securing the race victory. While this dominance was attributed to aerodynamic advantages, Ducati expert Davide Tardozzi predicts the championship battle between Ducati and Aprilia will continue to oscillate depending on circuit characteristics. Aprilia has found success at Le Mans, Mugello, and Silverstone, while Ducati has performed strongly at Jerez, Catalunya, Balaton Park, Brno, and Sachsenring.
In contrast, Marc Márquez faced a difficult weekend at Silverstone. After experiencing extreme tire degradation during the Sprint, which saw him finish ninth, he finished seventh in the main race. This performance, earning only ten of the possible 37 points available, increased the gap between Márquez and leader Jorge Martín to 40 points.
Off-track, Fabio Quartararo announced his move from Yamaha to Honda for 2027. The sport also faces an over-booking issue as a surge of young talent has left former Moto2 champion Manu González without a ride.
