Expansion of contemporary art exhibitions in Brazil

Overview

Art exhibitions and institutional partnerships continue to expand across Brazil. In Curitiba, the 16th Curitiba International Biennial at the Memorial de Curitiba features two free exhibitions centered on ‘thresholds’: one showcasing approximately 100 works and woodcut matrices by printmaker Ciro Fernandes, and another featuring the photography of Argentine artist Abraham Votroba.

In Ribeirão Preto, the 1st IEA-RP Watercolor Exhibition is scheduled at the University of São Paulo (USP) IEA-RP Cultural Space from August 20 to October 9. This showcase includes over 70 works by 27 artists and serves as parallel programming for the 51st Ribeirão Preto National-Contemporary Art Salon (SARP).

The 36th Bienal de São Paulo is also extending its reach through itinerant programming. In Sesc Rio Preto, the exhibition themed ‘Nem todo viandante anda estradas – Da humanidade como prática’ runs from August 19 to November 15, continuing a partnership with the city that dates back to 2012.

Additionally, the Museu Nacional da Cultura Afro-Brasileira (MUNCAB) in Salvador will host a traveling exhibition from the 36th Bienal de São Paulo from September 5 to November 29. Curated by Keyna Eleison and Thiago de Paula Souza, the exhibition explores dialogues with Afro-Brazilian and Afro-diasporic cultures, featuring works by 14 Brazilian and international artists, including local artists Antonio Társis, Alberto Pitta, and Nádia Taquary, as well as American photographer Ming Smith.
