Overview

The Italian telecommunications market is undergoing structural and performance shifts. Following the merger of Fastweb and Vodafone, the combined group reported increased profitability in the first half of 2026 despite a decline in total mobile and fixed connections. This financial growth was driven by integration synergies and cost rationalization, with the group aiming for over 300 million euros in savings by year-end. In terms of network performance, a ranking by Altroconsumo based on data from July 2025 to June 2026 placed Vodafone in first position for mobile network quality, followed by Fastweb. WindTre moved into third place, overtaking Tim, a shift attributed to the high proportion of 5G network usage among its customers. Iliad placed fifth in these quality rankings.

Expanding the mobile landscape, Sky Italia has transitioned into a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) with the launch of Sky Mobile, effective September 23, 2026. Moving away from its previous model of reselling Fastweb SIMs, Sky will now directly manage its mobile offers using the Fastweb and Vodafone network infrastructure. The service features two primary 5G plans: Sky Mobile Maxi (150 GB for €7.90 per month) and Sky Mobile Ultra (250 GB for €9.90 per month). Existing Sky customers receive enhanced benefits, such as 250 GB for the Maxi plan and unlimited data for the Ultra plan. Sky aims to create a unified ecosystem by bundling mobile services with Sky Wifi and Sky TV, with triple-play bundles starting at €35.90 per month. CEO Andrea Duilio described the launch as a strategic step to become a “comprehensive partner for families” by integrating connectivity with exclusive entertainment.
