Brazilian law enforcement operations against organized crime

Overview

Law enforcement agencies across Brazil continue to conduct diverse operations targeting organized crime, drug trafficking, and the exploitation of minors. Recent efforts have focused on high-value narcotics and heavy weaponry interceptions.

Under ‘Missão Redentor II’, a joint operation by the Federal Police and Federal Highway Police intercepted a major arsenal on the Presidente Dutra Highway near Seropédica, Rio de Janeiro. The shipment, hidden in a cargo van, included a .50 caliber rifle capable of penetrating armor and targeting aircraft, ten G3 7.62mm rifles, and an MP5 submachine gun. Authorities suspect the weapons were destined for territories controlled by the Comando Vermelho faction. This task force aims to disrupt heavy weaponry routes into Rio de Janeiro in accordance with measures related to ADPF 635 of the Supreme Federal Court.

Large-scale drug seizures persist, including the interception of 664 kilograms of marijuana hidden in fertilizer in Limeira, São Paulo, and 150.6 kilograms in Cajati. Other regional actions have resulted in the seizure of cocaine, crack, and ecstasy, including a drug trafficking operation in Cantagalo that resulted in four arrests.

Investigations into human trafficking and child exploitation remain a priority. In Florianópolis, authorities arrested a Dutch national and a Colombian woman for the suspected international trafficking and sexual exploitation of a Filipino woman; child sexual abuse material was also discovered on a mobile device during the investigation. In Londrina and Ibiporã, ‘Operation Anjos da Guarda VI’ continues to target the production of child sexual abuse material, specifically investigating the use of generative artificial intelligence to create such content, which recently led to the arrest of a 20-year-old student.
