Grand Sumo Autumn Basho tournament
Overview
The Grand Sumo Autumn Basho continues at the Ryogoku Kokugikan. On the 10th day, new Sekiwake Fujinokawa secured a winning record (kachi-koshi) by defeating Ryoganosuke, bringing his record to 8-2 and placing him within one win of the tournament leader. Fujinokawa is scheduled for a high-stakes match against the solo leader, Yokozuna Onosato, on the 11th day.
In the championship race, former Ozeki Asanoyama suffered his third loss following a defeat by Ryoganosuke, causing him to fall behind. Ozeki Kirishima also faces challenges to his Yokozuna promotion bid after suffering his third loss via a push-down by Minoumi; his former mentor, Mutsu-oyakata, noted that Kirishima requires more rigorous training to avoid losses to lower-ranked wrestlers.
In the lower divisions, former U-20 Japan rugby representative Tengakufuji made a successful Jonokuchi debut with a 4-1 winning record. Conversely, Mitakeumi recorded his sixth loss of the tournament after being defeated by Ichii. Other notable moments include Hokushoryu winning via an ipponzeoi throw in the third division but falling out of the ring due to the move's momentum, and 17-year-old British wrestler Eisei securing a quick yorikiri victory over 39-year-old veteran Mori in the Jonokuchi division.
