Disney’s Coven Academy becomes global streaming hit

Overview

Disney’s supernatural teen drama ‘Coven Academy’, created by Tim Federle, has emerged as a major global streaming success following its October 2026 premiere. Set in New Orleans, the 21-episode series follows teenage witches and warlocks at an elite magic boarding school. The production has maintained a 100% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, though its audience score currently stands at 73 percent.

Following its release on Freeform, Disney+, and Hulu, FlixPatrol data indicated the series reached the number one spot among all Disney+ TV shows worldwide, surpassing major titles like ‘Loki’ and ‘Bluey Compilations’. During its first week, the series logged 11.4 million global hours viewed. Nielsen data ranked the show as the top streaming series among teens aged 12 to 17 during its premiere weekend and placed it within the top five among all viewers. The series also demonstrated strong co-viewing trends, with many teen and child viewers watching alongside adults.

The series utilizes a unique format consisting of 21 chapters, each running between 10 and 15 minutes. Creator Tim Federle noted that the use of shorter chapters with frequent cliffhangers was intended to increase “propulsion and engagement” in a competitive media landscape.

To target younger audiences, Disney implemented a social media strategy by releasing the first chapter on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. This initiative generated over 30 million additional views, including 18 million on TikTok and 11 million on Instagram. Following this success, Disney renewed the series for a second season after it reached 20.3 million global hours watched on Disney+ and Hulu within its first three weeks. The cast includes Malina Pauli Weissman, Malachi Barton, Jordan Leftwich, Ora Duplass, Louis Thresher, and Tiffani Thiessen. Production for the second season is expected to take place in Vancouver.
