Microsoft PowerToys software updates

Overview

Microsoft has released successive updates to its open-source PowerToys utility suite, focusing on security, navigation, and system productivity.

Initial updates to the PowerToys Preview version introduced security mechanisms within the Workspaces environment, specifically warning users when launching unverified programs that require administrator privileges. Other technical enhancements included improvements to the Keyboard Manager, the Environment Variable Editor, and expanded read-only preview support for SQLite database files via the Peek module.

Subsequent updates to the Insider preview version focused on the Command Palette, enhancing keyboard navigation for files, applications, and system settings. These improvements included support for partial matches during searches and fixes for faulty extensions. Additionally, Microsoft has been working on system search optimizations within File Explorer, such as automatic folder indexing.

In version 0.102, Microsoft introduced new mouse-related tools, including ‘Mouse Button Lock’ to maintain a button-pressed state for dragging and ‘CursorHide’ to automatically hide the pointer during inactivity or text input. Mouse Button Lock can be activated by holding the button for several seconds, assisting with tasks like image editing. The Command Palette was further enhanced with a ‘quick-access shelf’ for pinning frequent commands. Furthermore, the ZoomIt tool now includes on-device transcription, allowing users to record spoken explanations during screenshots to paste both the image and text simultaneously. Other recent developments include expanded command-line support for Advanced Paste and Peek, alongside migrations for Color Picker and Text Extractor to WinUI 3.
