Yemen political and humanitarian crisis

Overview

Political tensions in Yemen have intensified regarding the ongoing conflict and the effectiveness of domestic and international leadership. Yahya Ali Al-Ra’i, Speaker of the Yemeni House of Representatives in Sana’a, has repeatedly condemned UN Security Council statements, accusing the Council of bias toward the Saudi-led coalition and distorting international standards. Al-Ra’i asserted that the Council ignores Yemen’s right to self-defense, citing over 60,000 civilian casualties from airstrikes on infrastructure since March 2015. He specifically held the Saudi regime responsible for failing to meet de-escalation commitments, noting recent strikes on Sanaa International Airport and public service facilities.

In correspondence with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Al-Ra’i disputed claims by envoy Hans Grundberg regarding maritime threats in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait. He maintained that navigation is safe for all vessels except those linked to the Saudi-led coalition, which face a “blockade against blockade” policy. Al-Ra’i reported that over 1.4 million people have died due to blockade-related consequences and over five million have been displaced.

Internal criticism has also mounted. Adel al-Hasani, leader of the Peace Forum to Stop the War in Yemen, criticized President Rashad al-Alimi and the Presidential Leadership Council, claiming the administration is overly dependent on foreign interests and has failed to manage liberated areas like Aden and Hadramaut. Additionally, Mehdi al-Mashat, President of the Supreme Political Council, accused Saudi Arabia of reneging on 2022 de-escalation understandings and tightening economic restrictions under direction from the United States and Israel.
