Apple Wallet and Apple Pay feature updates

Overview

Apple has expanded the functionality of its digital ecosystem through updates to Apple Wallet and clarifications regarding its relationship with Apple Pay. With the release of iOS 27, Apple Wallet introduced features allowing users to digitize physical cards, such as loyalty or gym memberships, via the iPhone camera. The update also implemented an automated bill-splitting tool powered by Apple Intelligence, which uses receipt photography to assign specific items to different contacts and allows users to request payments via Apple Cash. Furthermore, the system can now automatically track online orders by using Siri and Apple Intelligence to analyze confirmation emails in the Mail app. This tracking extracts details such as retailer, order number, products, price, and shipping information, providing real-time delivery updates for orders made via various methods, including PayPal, Klarna, and credit cards. Under the iOS 27 ‘Create a Pass’ feature, users can manually digitize loyalty cards, memberships, and tickets that lack official digital support. This can be achieved by scanning a physical card, generating a pass from a photo or screenshot containing a barcode or QR code, or manually entering details into a template. While the image-based method may require specific hardware like the iPhone 15 Pro or newer to utilize Apple Intelligence, the feature is noted to be a digital representation rather than a live integration. Consequently, custom passes do not automatically sync with a provider’s live data, such as reward balances, and compatibility with certain store scanners is not guaranteed. While Apple Wallet serves as a storage space for various digital assets like boarding passes and IDs, Apple Pay functions as the specific service used to facilitate transactions. Security for these payments is managed through a Device Account Number (DAN) stored in a Secure Element chip, ensuring actual card numbers are not shared with merchants.
