Tennessee Volunteers quarterback competition

Overview

Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel began evaluating quarterback options following a period of instability at the position. Initial reports indicated that five-star freshman Faizon Brandon, who had started the first five games of the season, was facing competition for his role after a difficult performance against Auburn and a previous loss to Texas where he sustained a right shoulder injury.

Backup George MacIntyre, who had been receiving first-team repetitions in practice, was subsequently named the starting quarterback for the upcoming road game against Arkansas. The decision followed MacIntyre’s relief appearance against Auburn, during which he completed eight of 10 passes for 86 yards.

MacIntyre earned his first career start during Tennessee’s 24-17 victory over Arkansas, recording 247 passing yards and one touchdown. Following that performance, MacIntyre has been named the starter for the No. 14 Tennessee Volunteers’ matchup against No. 6 Alabama. This decision comes as Brandon remains listed as questionable in the SEC availability report due to his ongoing shoulder injury.
