Humanitarian aid initiatives in Croatia
Overview
Humanitarian organizations in Croatia have initiated various programs to support vulnerable populations. In late September 2026, the Croatian Red Cross launched the ‘SOCIUS’ project, an EU-co-financed initiative designed to increase social inclusion for at-risk children and families. This project specifically targets Ukrainian children under temporary protection, children receiving minimum benefits, and those from the Roma minority, providing psychosocial support through July 2028.
By October 2026, efforts expanded into seasonal aid, health-focused campaigns, and volunteer-led community projects. The Red Cross Crikvenica launched its 54th annual ‘Solidarity in Action 2026’ campaign for food and hygiene packages, while Caritas of the Zagreb Archdiocese introduced the ‘When you do good, do double good’ campaign to support the Caritas House of Love.
In Valpovo, the Red Cross implemented a six-month pilot project providing respite care for family caregivers. Project leader Dunja Lazar noted that the success of this pilot influenced legislation, as the new Law on Personal Assistance now allows these caregivers to access personal assistants, addressing a group that previously lacked support.
On the island of Krk, Caritas Biskupije Krk organized the seventh edition of the ‘72 hours without compromise’ project. Approximately sixty volunteers participated in fifteen actions over four days, including renovating school yards, cleaning public spaces, assisting at Caritas facilities, and performing seasonal tasks like olive harvesting. Volunteers also engaged in social activities with residents of elderly care homes to improve community quality of life.
Other regional initiatives in October included the ‘Open and Inclusive Society for the Elderly’ project in the Metković region, providing free health screenings for individuals over 55.
