Dominican Republic public health initiatives

Overview

The Dominican Republic has undertaken several public health initiatives focused on infrastructure development and preventative care.

In the southern region, the National Health Service (SNS) has invested in medical facilities to expand specialized services. In Bahoruco, an investment of over RD$120 million facilitated the opening of a Diabetic Foot Unit at the San Bartolomé Provincial Hospital—the seventh of its kind in the national network—and the renovation of the Vista al Lago Primary Care Center. A hemodialysis unit is also nearing completion at the San Bartolomé facility. In San Juan, the Matayaya Primary Care Center was renovated with over RD$3.6 million to provide 24-hour care. In Barahona, the Jaime Mota University Regional Hospital restored sonography services and welcomed new medical residents. Additionally, plans are underway for a specialized burn unit at the José María Cabral y Báez Hospital in Santiago.

Further infrastructure upgrades include the first major renovation of the Villarpando health center in Azua in 42 years, which will soon include X-ray, laboratory, and dental services. In La Vega, the El Pino Primary Care Center received an investment of approximately RD$10 million for structural improvements and medical equipment, establishing dedicated units for emergency services, pharmacy, and tuberculosis patients.

Complementing these improvements, the Ministry of Public Health launched a nationwide seasonal influenza vaccination campaign. Coordinated by the Directorate of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases, the initiative aims to reduce mortality and hospitalization rates by distributing more than 400,000 doses across over 1,350 sites, including care centers, elderly homes, and Early Childhood Integral Care Centers (CAIPI).
