Croatia-Bosnia and Herzegovina border regulations
Overview
Border regulations between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina have undergone updates regarding customs and crossing classifications.
Customs procedures for transporting goods, such as furniture, remain strictly monitored. Travelers importing items for personal use from non-EU countries may qualify for exemptions up to 300 euros. However, officials scrutinize the value and quantity of goods to distinguish between personal use and commercial import. Notably, disassembling furniture into multiple boxes does not change its status as a single purchase or bypass customs requirements. Items in the cargo areas of freight-designed vehicles are generally not considered personal luggage and may require standard customs procedures.
Following a bilateral agreement signed on June 8, 2024, the Croatian government amended the Decree on Border Crossings, affecting 52 crossings. This update increases the number of permanent crossings for international passenger traffic while decreasing those designated for local border traffic. Nine existing crossings previously designated for local border traffic will be reclassified as permanent crossings for international passenger traffic. The number of road crossings for both passenger and freight traffic is set to increase from 14 to 17.
In Gradiška, the old border crossing is expected to resume operations by the end of October 2026 following repairs to a bridge over the Sava river. Miroslav Janković, director of Putevi Republike Srpske, stated the bridge is expected to function for passenger vehicles and buses, potentially with a weight limit of up to 20 tons. While this crossing may initially serve only personal vehicles and buses, the new crossing at Novi Varoš will remain open for all types of traffic.
