African swine fever response in Italy

Overview

Italian regional authorities have implemented various measures to combat the spread of African swine fever (ASF). In late July, the Province of Cuneo increased financial incentives for wild-boar culling, raising compensation for removing adult female boars in high-risk zones. Simultaneously, Tuscany introduced temporary derogations to DOP regulations, allowing producers to slaughter and house pigs outside designated areas for up to 12 months to maintain biosafety compliance without losing certification.

In late August, the Calabria Region formalized its support through a notice titled ‘Structural interventions aimed at preventing the spread of African swine fever’. The regional government is offering grants that cover 70% of eligible expenses for risk mitigation and prevention measures. These funds target individual agricultural entrepreneurs, associations, and cooperatives.

Eligible interventions include the installation of fences to block wild animals, disinfection systems, vehicle disinfection, insect protection, and the construction or renovation of clothing change and washing stations. Contributions range from a minimum of 10,000 euros up to 150,000 euros for large-scale farms with more than 501 animals. The deadline for applications is October 10, 2026.
