Air India expands Canada routes and fleet

Entities: Air India · Toronto · Mumbai · Boeing 787‑9 · Delhi

Overview

Air India’s post‑privatisation recovery continues. After announcing in mid‑July that most of the flights suspended during the summer will be reinstated for September 2026, the carrier has put the September schedule on sale and expects fares to ease as jet‑fuel prices stabilise. The airline, which posted a loss of over 27,000 crore rupees in FY 2026‑27, remains committed to its five‑year transformation that includes a 770‑aircraft order with 50‑60 deliveries expected in the next 18 months.

On 1 August 2026 the airline launched a daily nonstop Delhi‑Toronto service using newly delivered Boeing 787‑9 Dreamliners, cutting flight time by about three hours. The 787‑9 cabin carries 30 Business Class suites, 28 Premium Economy seats and 238 Economy seats, and additional 787‑9s were added to the route in early August.

A seasonal nonstop Mumbai‑Toronto service begins 25 October 2026, operating three times weekly through 26 March 2027 and adding roughly 2,000 seats per week, making Air India the sole carrier with a direct link between the two cities. The Mumbai‑Toronto flights use upgraded Boeing 777‑300ERs with First‑Class suites and flat‑bed Business seats, while all Toronto‑bound flights are slated to transition fully to the 787‑9 fleet by January 2027. By early 2027 the airline will also shift its New York operations to Terminal 6 at JFK.
