Airbus A350 development and KLM fleet integration

Overview

Airbus is advancing its A350 programs, specifically the A350F freighter and passenger models. The A350F, a cargo derivative of the A350-1000, is designed to compete with the Boeing 777 series. On September 29, 2026, the A350F prototype MSN700 completed its maiden flight from Toulouse-Blagnac Airport, lasting four hours and ten minutes. This initiates a nine-month certification campaign involving roughly 400 flight hours. While commercial service is expected in the second half of 2027, Airbus is already evaluating the addition of a second final assembly line to meet high demand. Lars Wagner, CEO of Airbus Commercial Aircraft, stated that the current production system is fully utilized, with a decision on a second line expected ‘rather sooner than later’ to enable dual-line production by the early 2030s.

Simultaneously, KLM is integrating the A350 into its fleet to replace aging Boeing 777-200ER and Airbus A330 aircraft. On October 2, 2026, KLM took delivery of its first Airbus A350-900, ‘De Nachtwacht’ (The Night Watch), in Toulouse. The aircraft features a three-class configuration for 331 passengers, including 34 Business Class suites, 26 Premium Comfort seats, and 271 Economy seats. The widebody offers approximately 25 percent lower fuel consumption and a 40 percent smaller noise footprint compared to previous generations. KLM plans to operate the aircraft from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol on routes including Toronto, Montreal, Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam, Nairobi, and Zanzibar.
