Amazon expands installment payments in Germany and Austria

Entities: Rocco Bräuniger · PayPal Holdings Inc. · PayPal Holdings Inc · Germany · Amazon.com Inc.

Overview

In mid‑July 2026 Amazon Germany launched a promotion for its Amazon Visa credit card during Prime Day, offering a €50 credit for Prime members and €10 for non‑Prime shoppers when the card is approved and used. Simultaneously, the retailer broadened its schufa‑free installment‑payment scheme to a select group of marketplace sellers, letting customers split purchases into up to twelve interest‑free monthly installments based on internal behavioural data rather than traditional credit checks.

A week later Amazon announced that, from August, it would introduce a PayPal‑backed installment‑payment option for eligible customers in Germany and Austria. The service finances purchases from €30 to €10,000 with repayment terms of three to 48 months and an effective annual interest rate of about 11.5 %. Customers can manage their plans via the PayPal app, make early repayments, or close the plan at any time.

On 28 July 2026 PayPal confirmed that the installment product would be integrated directly into the Amazon.de checkout and mobile app in both Germany and Austria. In addition to the standard three, six, twelve and twenty‑four‑month plans, shoppers can choose thirty‑six or forty‑eight‑month terms, with some products offered at 0 % financing. A German or Austrian PayPal account and a credit check are required; pricing and repayment details are shown before purchase, and repayments are withdrawn automatically from a bank account or debit card. PayPal’s Managing Director for the DACH region called the integration a “milestone” for its Buy‑Now‑Pay‑Later portfolio, and Amazon’s Country Manager highlighted the added flexibility at the familiar checkout.
