Amazon market presence and investment in Germany

Overview

Amazon maintains a dominant position in the German e-commerce market, accounting for approximately 63 percent of online sales revenue. While competitors such as Otto, Zalando, Temu, and Shein are seeing increased revenue, Amazon has surpassed a milestone of investing more than 100 billion euros in Germany since 2010.

During the Invest in Germany Summit in Berlin, the company announced a commitment to invest more than 16 billion euros in Germany by 2027. This capital will be distributed across strategic sectors, including cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and satellite infrastructure. Specifically, approximately 4.8 billion euros is earmarked for expanding cloud and AI infrastructure through the AWS region centered around Frankfurt. This follows previous AWS investments in German data centers totaling 8.8 billion euros between 2024 and 2026. Furthermore, additional funds will support the AWS European Sovereign Cloud in Brandenburg, which is projected to receive 7.8 billion euros in investments through 2040.

The company also plans to expand its Amazon Leo satellite network to provide internet services to regions with poor broadband coverage. In the logistics sector, Amazon is modernizing fulfillment centers and expanding its network, a move that has already contributed to the creation of 3,000 new jobs. Technological expansion includes establishing a new robotics laboratory in Berlin and a second research center focused on robotics and AI, which is expected to double the company’s research staff in the capital. Increased funding for original content productions for Prime Video is also included. These developments occur as Amazon seeks to strengthen its European presence while navigating the European Union’s regulatory framework regarding technology dependence and the impact of AI on the labor market.
