Amazon operations and economic impact in Italy

Overview

Amazon Italy is managing internal labor disputes alongside reporting its long-term economic footprint in the country.

In August 2026, Italian unions expressed concern over a contract transfer involving airport ground staff. Unions reported that Amazon and contractor Gda failed to attend a meeting regarding the relocation of operations from Malpensa to Brescia-Montichiari, a move affecting approximately 190 workers. The unions characterized the absence as a sign of “scarsa attenzione” toward employees. During this period, Amazon Italy Logistics also introduced a “solidarity holidays” program, allowing permanent staff to anonymously donate paid leave to colleagues facing personal or family crises.

Regarding its economic presence, Amazon Italy Vice President and Country Manager Giorgio Busnelli reported that the company has invested over 30 billion euros in Italy since 2010, creating 19,000 permanent jobs. In 2025 alone, investments exceeded 5 billion euros. According to Keystone Strategy, these activities have contributed over 23 billion euros in added value to Italy’s GDP. Data from Teha Group also ranks Amazon as the third-largest foreign-controlled company regarding investments in Italy during the 2020-2024 period.

Speaking at the Ambrosetti Forum in September 2026, Busnelli noted that Amazon supports more than 20,000 small and medium-sized enterprises through its platform. He also referenced a study, ‘Unlocking the Future: High-Tech Investments for Italian Competitiveness,’ which found that Italy’s high-tech investments are more than 30% lower than the European average. Busnelli suggested that closing this gap could add up to 27 billion euros to the national GDP, provided Italy addresses bureaucracy, regulatory stability, and the digital skills gap.
