Rising antisemitic attacks on Jewish sites and people in DE
Overview
Germany is experiencing an increase in antisemitic incidents targeting Jewish community sites and individuals. In Wuppertal, a 37-year-old man was arrested for an attempted arson attack on the Bergische Synagogue using flammable liquids shortly before Yom Kippur.
Reports from the Central Council of Jews in Germany indicate that 45 percent of surveyed Jewish communities have been affected by antisemitic attacks. In Duisburg, state security officials are investigating antisemitic graffiti and swastikas found on tents and trailers at a synagogue children’s festival, following previous instances of property damage and vandalism in the region.
In Berlin, authorities are investigating a series of attacks against a 67-year-old shop owner in the Kreuzberg district. Between October 7 and October 9, groups of youths allegedly targeted the man—who uses a wheelchair—with pepper spray, physical violence, and property damage. Investigators are looking into a possible antisemitic motive, noting the victim had displayed posters protesting antisemitism.
In Erlangen, police in Middle Franconia have identified a 16-year-old suspect in connection with an antisemitic incident during a CSD (Christopher Street Day) parade. The suspect is accused of spitting at the feet of Jewish community members participating in the event. While the Open Antifascist Meeting Erlangen issued an apology to those feeling insecurity, the group alleged that Jewish demonstrators had been provoked from within their own group, a claim police have not confirmed.
In response to these threats, the Technical University of Braunschweig has initiated an interdisciplinary research project titled ‘Hiding in plain sight – Visible Architecture and Unsafe Jews’. The study analyzes security through the lenses of architecture, police protection, and the subjective sense of safety to improve the protection of Jewish buildings and visitors.
