iPhone 18 Pro series launch, technical issues, and storage

Overview

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max series feature the 2nm A20 Pro chip and an improved vapor chamber system. While early endurance tests by TechDroider showed the Pro Max trailing the OnePlus 15, newer data highlights distinct battery profiles: the Pro Max offers up to 43 hours of video playback, while the standard Pro provides 34 hours. In high-intensity testing, the iPhone 18 Pro maintained over 16 hours of continuous 5G web browsing. Both models support fast charging via Power Delivery 3.2, reaching 50% charge in approximately 15 minutes.

Technical issues persist, with users reporting Face ID failures that can cause “panic-full” restarts. Apple has labeled these “software-related issues” and scheduled iOS 27.0.1 as a fix. Regarding repairability, iFixit assigned a provisional score of 7 out of 10, noting risks of cracking the screen's plastic frame and a potentially unrepairable variable aperture camera.

Storage performance varies significantly by capacity. The 256 GB and 512 GB models use faster Triple-Level Cell (TLC) flash memory, whereas the 1 TB and 2 TB models utilize Quad-Level Cell (QLC) memory. To manage QLC's slower speeds, Apple employs a multi-layered caching architecture including an SLC cache and a TLC buffer. However, under continuous write loads or as the device reaches high capacity, speeds can drop significantly—as low as 1.1 MB/s during simulated total saturation. Additionally, the 1 TB model showed 38% slower performance in 4K random file read tests compared to the 512 GB variant.

To optimize battery life, Apple advises against frequently closing background applications, noting that manual app management can increase energy consumption as processes must reload data.
