Apple Music branding and design updates

Overview

Apple is testing significant visual changes to its Apple Music service through software betas. Initial observations indicated a potential shift toward a “bolder, more retro-inspired identity” featuring a heavy, rounded lowercase typeface reminiscent of a “Y2K or vintage music magazine aesthetic.”

Subsequent updates suggest a different design direction characterized by an “extreme minimalist aesthetic.” This newer approach reportedly replaces the service’s traditional pink-red branding with a monochrome color scheme, utilizing black-and-white app icons and blue accent colors in the menu bar.

Apple has now officially launched a new brand identity under the guiding principle “made by sound.” Developed in collaboration with music producer Fred again.. and NEST Acoustics, the redesign integrates a new sonic identity with a revised logo and visual language.

The new visual elements were derived from real sound waves rather than purely digital creation. Apple utilized a transducer to convert electrical audio signals into mechanical vibrations, which were applied to a bath of mineral oil. The resulting wave patterns and light refractions provided the foundation for animations aligned with Apple’s “Liquid-Glass” design aesthetic. The updated logo features a modified version of the SF Pro system font in bold lowercase letters combined with the Apple symbol, while the redesigned musical note icon draws inspiration from these captured fluid movements.

The rollout of this identity, which includes a monochrome app icon with translucent elements, is expected to reach users globally via software updates such as iOS 27.2 and macOS 27.2. In addition to these interface changes, Apple is preparing to move its radio studios to the new Apple Music Hall at London’s Battersea Power Station in 2026.
