ARA Libertad completes 54th Instruction Cruise

Overview

The Argentine Navy training ship ARA Libertad, known as the ‘Ambassador of the Seas’, has completed its 54th Instruction Cruise. The vessel returned to the Buenos Aires Naval Shipyard on September 19, concluding a 161-day mission that began on April 11 and covered approximately 16,000 nautical miles.

Commanded by Captain Jorge Gabriel Cáceres, the ship visited nine international ports, including locations in the United States (New Orleans, Norfolk, Baltimore, New York, and Boston), Jamaica (Kingston and San Juan), and Brazil (Fortaleza and Rio de Janeiro). During the final stop in Rio de Janeiro, the crew and midshipmen engaged in professional training at the Brazilian Naval School and participated in strategic dialogues with advisors from the South Atlantic Maritime Area Coordinator (CAMAS) to strengthen maritime cooperation between Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay.

The mission served as a professional training period for midshipmen from various naval, infantry, and professional corps promotions. The arrival in Buenos Aires was attended by Defense Minister Carlos Alberto Presti, who joined high-ranking naval and military officials. In his remarks, Presti noted that the crew and midshipmen “represented our country” and were “tempered by the sea.”

The return was marked by emotional reunions for the 256 crew members. Notably, several sailors, including Petty Officer José María Báez and Petty Officer Sando Flores, celebrated the births of their first children during the voyage, having witnessed the events via video calls or photographs while at sea.
