Architectural and urbanism initiatives in Sarajevo and Split

Overview

Sarajevo is preparing to host the international architectural event ‘d. i. a. spona: Sarajevo School of Architecture in the World’ from October 8 to November 25, 2026. Organized by the DIASPONA Foundation and the University of Sarajevo’s Faculty of Architecture, the initiative features an exhibition at the Sarajevo Railway Station to showcase the work of 87 former students. The project aims to reconnect the city with the global architectural community and facilitate professional exchange.

Building on these efforts, the ‘City Perspectives’ urbanism symposium has been scheduled for October 10, 2026, in Sarajevo. This symposium will feature international lecturers to discuss contemporary urbanism, planning regulations, and participatory city shaping. Additionally, the Split Architects Society in Croatia has launched a separate initiative to select young architectural firms for the ‘Pumaž’ exhibition and lecture series, focusing on urban development challenges in historical locations.

As of October 9, the DIASPONA exhibition is officially underway at the Sarajevo Railway Station. Supported by UNESCO and funded by the European Union, the exhibition showcases over 300 works from architects educated in Sarajevo who now practice globally, with reach extending from Canada to New Zealand.

During the ‘City Perspectives – Contemporary Approach to Urbanism’ symposium held in Sarajevo, international architects discussed spatial planning, heritage protection, and the necessity of citizen participation. Experts emphasized the importance of integrating professional knowledge with local needs to create authentic and functional urban environments.

In a separate architectural development, architects Besnik Jakupi and Rinora Durmiši won an international competition to design a new grandstand near a tennis court in Mavrovo. The winning design, organized by the association MELEEM and Mavrovo Open, features a compact metal structure intended to serve as a community meeting point.
