Arequipa police vehicle procurement and delivery

Overview

The procurement of patrol vehicles for 58 police stations in the Arequipa region of Peru has transitioned from a period of administrative delays to a scheduled delivery.

Initially, reports from the Contraloría General de la República highlighted setbacks in the acquisition process. After two previous selection processes were declared void in 2025, a third call was approved, eventually awarding a contract worth approximately S/ 18.1 million to Maquinarias S.A. under the ‘Works for Taxes’ modality. These delays meant delivery timelines were no longer aligned with original schedules.

Following allegations that vehicles had been left unprotected in a depot in Cerro Colorado, Regional Governor Rohel Sánchez announced that 100 new vehicles would be officially delivered to the National Police of Peru on October 26. The Governor attributed the previous delays to administrative hurdles involving the Ministry of the Interior and the Public Registries (Sunarp), specifically regarding the processing of vehicle titles, license plates, and required payment certificates.

On October 25, the regional government completed the delivery of the 100 vehicles to the National Police of Peru (PNP). The fleet consists of 86 pickup trucks for 58 police stations and 14 vehicles for the Emergency Unit. Governor Sánchez urged the police to use the resources to combat organized crime, noting that the distribution covers provinces including Arequipa, Islay, Camaná, Caravelí, Castilla, Condesuyos, and Caylloma. The delivery aims to address a critical need for fleet renewal, as many existing regional police vehicles are over 10 to 25 years old. However, Sánchez noted that full operational capacity remains dependent on the Ministry of the Interior regarding fuel allocation and maintenance.
