Argentine forest conservation and management

Overview

Argentina continues to manage diverse forest conservation and management efforts. Under the international PEFC system, the country has certified over 380,000 hectares across five provinces, including Misiones and Buenos Aires, balancing sustainable timber production with biodiversity and water protection.

Local conservation initiatives are advancing in La Falda, where municipal authorities are developing a legal framework to establish Parque Puma. This proposed natural and cultural reserve would protect 75 hectares of native forest. However, illegal logging remains a critical issue; in San Luis, local producer Mario Baigorria has filed complaints alleging unauthorized extraction of algarrobo and quebracho wood involving local police and municipal relatives.

On a broader scale, the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA), the FAO, and the Green Climate Fund are providing technical assistance for 40 Integrated Forest-Livestock Management (MBGI) plans across 12 provinces, a US$ 4.4 million initiative. Additionally, the National Parks Administration is leading a US$ 50 million restoration project across seven national protected areas, including Tierra del Fuego, to recover degraded ecosystems and combat invasive species.

In response to El Niño, authorities in Corrientes and Santiago del Estero are implementing preventive measures to manage water excess and flood risks. However, environmental policy faces scrutiny; a study in the journal Nature indicates that between 2009 and 2024, successive administrations implemented strategies that effectively legalized previously illegal deforestation. Specifically, a 2024 update to the Native Forest Land Use Planning (OTBN) excluded 270,000 hectares that were illegally cleared and reduced protection for another 220,000 hectares of high conservation value.
