Assam flood relief and political disputes in Sivasagar
Overview
Raijor Dal chief and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi initiated a hunger strike in flood-ravaged Sivasagar, Assam, to demand ₹10 lakh in compensation for every family affected by recent flooding. Gogoi also called for the floods to be declared a national disaster and requested a CBI investigation into the causes of the flooding.
Following these demands, administrative employees in Sivasagar staged a pen-down strike to protest the alleged misconduct of MLA Gogoi toward District Commissioner Mridul Yadav. The dispute reportedly occurred during discussions regarding the distribution of flood relief grants, specifically when Gogoi allegedly demanded the inclusion of 2,000 additional beneficiaries for a ₹15,000 government grant. While the All Assam District Administrative Employees’ Association stated they do not oppose efforts to assist citizens, they condemned the MLA’s reported intimidation of the District Commissioner.
Political tensions have since escalated, with eight First Information Reports (FIRs) filed against Gogoi by various BJP wings. These complaints allege that Gogoi made provocative speeches and issued threats of physical assault against BJP workers concerning relief aid distribution.
Meanwhile, the Sivasagar district administration has extended its Rapid Damage Assessment Survey until August 30. The survey has identified approximately 42,500 houses with severe or full damage. While ₹15,000 in one-time assistance has been credited to 58,795 beneficiaries, over 7,500 transactions remain delayed due to incorrect banking details.
