Assam railway service disruptions

In early August 2026, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) began repairing flood‑damaged tracks and bridges on the Simaluguri line in Assam’s Sivasagar district. After an inspection by the railway’s general manager, diesel‑locomotive services were restored on the repaired segment, while special trains and diverted routes maintained connectivity for local passengers. Full electric service was postponed until displaced residents could return.

The following day, NFR reported additional safety concerns on the Lumding–Badarpur hill section after track settlement was detected at New Harangajao station. Operations were limited to a single line with continuous monitoring, and passenger trains were restricted to night‑time hours. Six long‑distance services were cancelled and several others were rescheduled to late‑night departures to ensure safety while restoration work continued.

By September 2026, NFR identified that the instability at New Harangajao, which began around July 20, was caused by changes in natural watercourses and drainage patterns leading to heavy water accumulation beneath the ground. Restoration efforts involving approximately 500 personnel and specialized machinery, such as hydraulic piling rigs and excavators, are underway to stabilize the infrastructure.

While operations remain restricted to Line No. 3, further service disruptions occurred in early September, including the cancellation of the Guwahati–Dullabcherra and Guwahati–Silchar Express services. NFR expects to restore Line No. 2 by September 5, 2026, with Line No. 1 projected for restoration by the end of the month.
