Lorenzo Musetti wins ATP Lyon title

Overview

The ATP 250 tournament in Lyon, which replaced the Marseille tournament, commenced on October 19 on indoor hard courts. The initial draw included top seeds such as Flavio Cobolli and Taylor Fritz, alongside notable players like Stan Wawrinka and Matteo Berrettini. As the competition progressed, the tournament reached the semifinal stage with an all-Italian matchup between top seed Lorenzo Musetti and sixth seed Flavio Cobolli. Musetti secured his place in the final after a dramatic comeback victory against Cobolli, winning 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 and saving four match points. This encounter marked the sixteenth all-Italian semifinal in the Open Era. In the final, Lorenzo Musetti defeated Taylor Fritz with a score of 6-3, 6-4 to claim the ATP 250 Lyon title at the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes. This victory represents Musetti’s third career ATP title and his first since 2022, ending a streak of seven consecutive final losses. The win also assists Musetti in climbing to 24th in the PIF ATP Live Rankings. Fritz had reached the final following a 6-3, 7-5 semifinal victory over fellow American Tommy Paul, a match in which Fritz recorded 15 aces and saved all nine break points faced. Despite facing physical challenges and injuries throughout the 2026 season, the 24-year-old Musetti described the performance as his best, noting that his competitive spirit was key to the victory. Musetti’s performance was notably dominant in the final, as he prevented Fritz from earning a single break point, disrupting Fritz’s tournament run of winning all 31 of his service games. Musetti becomes the first Italian man to win a singles title in Lyon. Musetti described the tournament as a “rollercoaster of emotions,” noting that he played through physical discomfort to achieve the win.
